Would I Renew the program for Season 11?

2 12 Men 7A

Will these three sign?

It’s difficult to get confidential information on this show and have found conflicting information.  Yet, we can assume that revenues and expenses are somewhat close.  On the revenue side, if the show produces 12 30 seconds commercials at $200,000 each then that’s around 2.4 million per episode or more.  If expenses are around 2.7 million (see above) the program has a per episode loss of $300,000.  Of course, some shows squeeze in eight minutes which can change the profit/ loss dynamics a great deal.
Thus, Warner Bros. who produces the show makes a nice profit on this program and so does CBS (in the long run through syndication).   A careful look at CBS  financial figures on the internet reveals that CBS is doing much better than it was just five years ago.  Part of that success is associated with Two and a Half Men.  It’s been one of their saving graces.  And it’s hard to let a cash cow go.  You want to milk it for as long as you can. Plus, there are not a lot  potentially successful shows waiting in the wings.  Two and a Half Men, even though it is a very old show, still has punch.
My personal opinion is that this offbeat, poor me, comedy show is inappropriate for the early Prime Time hour that it is appearing in now.  I understand the economics of leaving the show where it is. But in a time of such turmoil in the world, we need people who have the character to represent themselves in a civil and dignified way.  The show has a way of putting down women and devaluing the importance of lasting physical and emotional relationships between men and women.  A healthy concept is important for the family and raising children…America’s future is in its children.  And having restraints on profits over people in so many ways enhances the overall human experience.  With this in mind, I would put ethics over economics and make the show move to a much later hour.  After all, wasn’t that what censors are supposed to do…especially for Network Broadcasters?

Will Two and a Half Men be renewed?

2 1/2 Men Cast

It’s not uncommon for a network program to lose money for the network. Even if there is a program loss per episode, strong viewing here can bring overall revenues for the evening through audience flow offsetting any individual program cost losses. (Some people are lazy and don’t switch channels and continue to watch). Plus, syndication revenues already in existence for this show can make this show very profitable in the long run since the production costs have already been met.
Two and a Half Men is primarily shot on set in the studio where the condo is located that Kutcher’s character owns. Off set shooting seems to be limited.
Should and will Two and a Half Men be renewed for an 11th season? This program is already the longest running sitcom on TV Today. Most programs never get to ten years, much less go even further. There has been a great deal of money already made and to be made off this sitcom in syndication.
2.5 MenIt also helps CBS keep its hold in the ratings that helps get top dollar from advertisers. It is not technically the Lead In program to Thursday night’s Prime Time…The Big Bang Theory is. It definitely is an anchor for the first hour by hanging onto much of the audience adding to the audience flow for the Nine O’clock viewers.

It’s hard imagine CBS and Warner Bros. won’t make every effort to let this show go into another season.   It’s all about the money.  The money is too good!  The one thing that could dis-rail the whole process is that the the two main actors Kutcher and Cryer ask for too much and won’t sign.  End the end, this will be the deciding blow.

Is Jon Cryer important to 2.5 Men?

ImageJon Cryer’s long run of unsuccessful TV projects finally ended in 2003; Cryer was cast as Alan Harper on the hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men.  CBS executives did not approve knowing about his failures.  Yet despite their wishes, he was cast anyway to portray Alan Harper on the now hit comedy series.  To date, he has earned seven Primetime Emmy Awardnominations and two wins for his acting work on the show.

His two wins were in 2009 and 2012. Cryer also received a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television in 2011.

After former co-star Charlie Sheen‘s departure from the series, Cryer’s character has since become the show’s central character, mainly due to the show’s retooled plot.

Star Jon Cryer definitely feels a difference on the set since Ashton Kutcher replaced the hit sitcom’s former star.  On the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) on Sunday night (1-30-12), he told E! That Kutcher is “great. He’s a clown. He is up for anything, willing to do anything… a great, great spirit.”

Image

When E! host Giulianna Rancic asked if things felt differently on set in this post-Sheen era, Cryer, who was nominated for his first SAG award took a bit of a jab at his former co-star. “It’s a little less suspenseful being on the set nowadays,” he said with a laugh. “When you come into work, you’re pretty sure [Kutcher’s] going to be there. And nobody’s pushed his car off a cliff or anything like that”

As for Sheen, who is currently working on his FX series Anger Management, Cryer said, “I haven’t spoken with him though. I wish him well. He’s got a good team around him and I can’t imagine he’s not going to put out a good show.”

jon_cryerJon Cryer married entertainment reporter Lisa Joyner in Mexico on Saturday, his rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively. “They’re very, very happy,” his rep says. The ceremony took place at the Chapel at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with a reception at a private residence. The bride wore an A-line Empire waist Monique Lhuillier gown with ivory lace over champagne satin.

Cryer, 41, announced his engagement to Joyner, host of the TV Guide Channel’s InFANity, in January on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  “Lisa is adorable,” says Cryer’s costar Melanie Lynskey. “She makes him so happy. He’s a very funny guy, but he’s also very sincere and sweet and she understands that side of him. They are very adorable together.”

This is the second marriage for Cryer, who has a 6-year-old son, Charlie, with his first wife Sarah Trigger.

Sitcom Script Structure

2012 Season Logo

The Office is an American comedy television series broadcast by the NBC network. It is an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name.  The Office was adapted for American audiences by Greg Daniels, a veteran writer for Saturday Night Live, King of the Hill and the Simpsons.  It genre is Sitcom Mockumentarry.

The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. To simulate the look of an actual documentary, it is filmed with a single camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track.

A mockumentary (a portmanteau of the words mock and documentary), is a type of film or TV show in which fictional events are presented in documentary style to create a parody.  Other successful television mockumentaries include the American sitcoms Parks and Recreation (2009–present), and Modern Family (2009–present).

Most sitcoms have a three act structure.  The Office seems to follow much of the same procedure.  It starts out with a cold opening somewhat defining the basic premise of the show.  We are exposed to the intentions of the show (sometimes more than one premise is exposed).  But usually not all the intentions are illuminated in the beginning.  We have to watch to see the other stories.

Tensions between cast members seem to be present through out most cast members and outside guest’s appearances.  Many of them also seem to partner up as a team.  After all, they do work for the same company.  This cast seems to be a bit on the sociopathic side. So it’s difficult to really figure them out.

Characteristic of sociopaths: glibness and superficial charm, manipulative and conning, grandiose sense of self.  They feel entitled to certain things as “their right.” Pathological lying is common and they can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. They seem to lack remorse, shame, or guilt.  On top of all this, some are extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

In act one, we seem to move into the different stories A, B, C (not necessarily in that order).  Act 2 can be just as choppy as we move through story line A B C (once again sometimes not in that order).

Act 3 can be just as much of a shake up. But the show needs to intensify the problem.  Sometimes the subplot resolves into the main plot.  There needs to be resolution.  But sometimes that resolution leaves more to be desired.  In other words, things can be left in the open so that the audience will stay tuned to see if it is in the next episode.

Charlie Sheen vs. Ashton Kutcher

Image

As you know from a previous blog Charlie Sheen’s (Charlie Harper) character was killed off.  The way he left was embarrassing for the show.  He was cynical and derogatory towards his experiences while there.  No wonder they killed him off by letting a subway train hit him.  His wife said, ‘His body just exploded like a balloon full of meat.’

They let Ashton Kutcher’s (Walden Schmidt) character exploded on the set in a nude scene. Walden is a billionaire whose wife dumped him causing him to attempt suicide in the ocean before ending up soaking wet on the deck of Alan Harper’s Malibu beach house.

Within a short period of time Walden, aka Ashton, has stripped out of his wet clothes and is standing completely naked in the living room.

ImageThe two men, having bonded over the women who dumped them, decide to go out for drinks where they manage to pick up a couple of women to bring back to the house.

However in true fashion, Alan gets left behind and Walden gets both ladies to himself. He then agrees, whilst hilariously still naked, that he is going to buy the house.

About a year ago, Charlie Sheen had some colorful words to say about his Two and a Half Men replacement Ashton Kutcher. The actor called in to TMZ‘s live web show on Thursday and said of Ashton: “I’m tired of lying … I’m tired of pretending the show doesn’t suck … I’m tired of pretending Ashton doesn’t suck.” http://www.celebuzz.com/2012-02-17

Ashton was a good fill in for Charlie.  It’s still on the air another year.  But this was Charlie’s show and it’s hard to replace him.  Some viewer will never be happy with anyone but Charlie.  But Ashton has worked hard to give the show it’s best chance of survival.  The show is in its tenth season and it’s not unusual to cancel as show that has lasted that long.

Two and a Half Men star Jon Cryer definitely feels a difference on set since Ashton Kutcher replaced the hit sitcom’s former star Charlie Sheen.

On the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) on Sunday night (1-30-12), he told E! that Kutcher is “great. He’s a clown. He is up for anything, willing to do anything… a great, great spirit.”

When E! host Giulianna Rancic asked if things felt differently on set in this post-Sheen era, Cryer — who was nominated for his first SAG award — took a bit of a jab at his former co-star. “It’s a little less suspenseful being on the set nowadays,” he said with a laugh. “When you come into work, you’re pretty sure [Kutcher’s] going to be there. And nobody’s pushed his car off a cliff or anything like that”

As for Sheen, who is currently working on his FX series Anger Management, Cryer said, “I Imagehaven’t spoken with him though. I wish him well. He’s got a good team around him and I can’t imagine he’s not going to put out a good show.”

So if the show doesn’t make it, it might have little to do with Ashton.  And more to do with a system that likes to retire shows and send them to syndication.

Who is Ashton Kutcher

Image

A Young Ashton

Almost everyone knows Ashton Kutcher took Charlie Sheen’s place as a lead in Two and a Half Men.   Who is he?

On February 7, 1978 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Larry and Diane Kutcher welcomed the birth of twin boys. Christopher Ashton Kutcher followed five minutes after his fraternal brother Michael, who was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy.

Ashton Kutcher left the University of Iowa behind for New York when he won a Fresh Faces of Iowa modeling contest in 1997. After a brief turn strutting for Calvin Klein, Kutcher landed his breakthrough role as airhead Michael Kelso in That ’70s Show (1998).

He was nominated for Worst Actor of 2004 for his roles in the films Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), Just Married (2003) and My Boss’s Daughter (2003). However, he did not win.

Leveraging his good looks and goofball appeal, Kutcher created Punk’d, the MTV hidden-camera show in which he played pranks on fellow celebrities. Some wondered if he was “punking” them when he began dating actress Demi Moore 15 years his senior, but the couple expressed their lasting commitment when they married in 2005. Moore’s children from her previous marriage to Bruce Willis call Kutcher MOD, short for “my other dad.”

Demi

The unlikely duo first stepped out as a couple in May 2003. Despite their age difference, the couple became notorious for their PDA-packed outings and gushy tweets. In November 2011, amid Kutcher’s high-profile affair with San Diego party girl Sara Leal, Moore announced plans to divorce the now  Two and a Half Men star.

Kutcher’s debut as Charlie Sheen’s replacement in CBS’s Two and a Half Men (2003) was seen by 28.7 million people on September 19, 2011. The Nielsen Company reported that was more than any other episode in the series’ first 8 seasons, when Sheen was the star. On the very same night, Charlie Sheen was roasted on a Comedy Central special.

It is reported that his salary in 20 million dollars a year.  He is a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, and can be seen wearing various items of Bears clothing in his films.  He is also s a liberal Democrat and has supported the presidencies of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

But will Kutcher be able to sustain the momentum of the show to keep it on for many more seasons.  Last week CBS announced it is renewing 18 series, lauding the strength and stability of its prime-time slate. Talks are also underway to bring back Two and a Half Men for its 11th season.[1]  Some think maybe a season or two while others would like to see it go altogether.  Kutcher has indeed filled the shoes of Sheen. But time has a way of making all  shows obsolete. And 10 years is a long time.

AND IF TWO AND A HALF MEN IS SO BAD WHY DONT YOU GIVE BACK ALL THAT MONEY YOU MADE ON THE SHOW?

Two and a Half Men ‘filth’, Says Angus Jones “Jake”

According to EW, Angus T.Jones could be in breach of his “Two And A Half Men” contract. “Most actors’ deals typically include disparagement clauses that prohibit them from making negative statements about their show in public, but it’s rare for any studio to enforce such a codicil,” EW wrote. The website noted that Jones is unlikely to be fired due to the integral part he plays on “Two And A Half Men.”

Angus T. Jones doesn’t want to be on “Two and a Half Men” anymore. In a video interview with the religious website Forerunner Chronicles, Jones spoke out against the show and called it “filth.”

“If you watch ‘Two and a Half Men,’ please stop watching ‘Two and a Half Men,'” Jones says around the 7:45 mark in his video interview, which the website billed as “The Testimony of the Awakening of [a] star.” “I’m on ‘Two and a Half Men,’ and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it, please stop filling your head with filth,” he continues.

“People say it’s just entertainment,” he said. “Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise yTwo-Half-Men-tv-91ou, you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch on television. It’s bad news.”Two-Half-Men-tv-60

Jones isn’t the first star to speak out against “Two and a Half Men.” His rant comes about a year-and-a-half after Charlie Sheen’s meltdown, during which he repeatedly ripped the show and its creator Chuck Lorre. In response, the series wrapped production early, Sheen’s character was written off the show, and Ashton Kutcher joined the cast as his replacement.

Warner Bros., the production company of “Two And A Half Men,” had no comment on Jones’ interview.Two-Half-Men-tv-50

Angus T. Jones Trashes ‘Two And A Half Men’

After a month-a-half hiatus, Two and a Half Men co-star Angus T. Jones was returning to the set of the CBS comedy the next week to film his first episode following the release of his controversial religious testimonial. In a sign that there were no hard feelings between 2.5 Men producers and Jones, his character got a meaty storyline in his first episode back. Emmy award winner Jaime Pressly had been cast as a new lover for Jones’ Jake. She was introduced in the episode, which started production in mid-January. In a guest starring and potentially recurring role, the My Name Is Earl star Pressly will play Jake’s rough around the edges “cougar” girlfriend.

Young Angus also found his personal life under the spotlight when it was revealed that his parents have an alleged criminal past. Mug shots of the pair emerged in October 2010, taken on their arrest in 1997.  His mother Carey had father Kelly arrested on an assault charge after he allegedly pulled her out of a car and pushed her to the ground.  She later dropped the charge, but Kelly was ordered to complete an anti-violence class.  Carey was arrested the same year on a burglary charge, which was later dismissed ‘pending further investigation.’

He’s one of the highest paid children on U.S. TV and Angus T Jones has acquired the Hollywood body to match his millions.  The 19-year-old actor appeared to have slimmed down a tad when he made an appearance at a charity gala in Washington D.C. in April, 2011. Angus has lost the puppy fat that he carried as a child looking trim in his slick black suit.

As a youngster Angus had a far fuller face, starting work on Two and a Half Men back in 2003 when he was just 11-years-old.  Of course, as the years have gone on he has ‘grown into his body’ shedding a few pounds and maturing into the svelte young man he is now.

Since he looks more like a man now and not a kid, will his audience listen to what he has to say and tune out?

How did Charley Die? In season nine, he is gone but the show went on.

Charles Francis “Charlie” Harper is a fictional character in the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men.  He starred on the show from seasons 1 to 8.  His character was played by actor Charlie Sheen.

On September 19th 2011 after months of anticipation the world finally found out what killed Charlie Harper and it wasn’t pretty.

Rose…Charlie’s wife

As the new season of the show premiered on CBS that year the curtain went up with a funeral scene of Charlie Sheen’s character.

And with every woman Charlie had ever had a serious relationship with sitting in the chapel, his new wife Rose explained what happened to him following his admission of cheating. “I forgave him because I loved him unconditionally, so you can imagine my horror when the very next day he slipped on the metro platform and fell in front of an oncoming train,” said Rose to the congregation.  She is played by Melanie Lynskey.

Mourning: The funeral is packed with Charlie’s many conquests that all seem happy to see him gone.

She went on, “Just want you to know that Charlie didn’t suffer,’ she added. “His body just exploded like a balloon full of meat.”

After the funeral, Alan, Charlie’s brother is seen cradling the urn of ashes and talking to them, discussing what he is planning on doing with them.

‘What do we do with you? I know what you said you wanted but I don’t think Pamela Anderson will agree to swallow your ashes,’ he says.

‘So I thought we could scatter you on the beach. Where oiled up women can sit on you. Just like in life.’

After taking the lid off the urn and announcing ‘no time like the present,’ Alan makes his way towards the deck but is startled by Ashton Kutcher standing in the window, causing him to throw the ashes all over the carpet. Image

Writer Chuck Lorre

Writers for Two and a Half Men:

CBS’s Two and a Half Men is one of the most successful shows on televisions, but it’s an anomaly. Sitcom scribes have become such an endangered species that it’s not even clear that the job title exists anymore. “‘I’m a writer’ has become very prevalent.” said Howard Klein, executive producer of The Office.  Or,  alternately, “I’m a comedy writer.”  And seven months after the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike settlement, “comedy writers” have turned into a kind of lost tribe, which one such displaced person described as “a lot of depressed people wandering around Silver Lake” [1].

There are many writers who have or do write for Two and a Half Men.  Chuck Lorre (born Charles Michael Levine on October 18, 1952) [2] is the best know writer on the show.  Others include, to name a few, are Lee Aronsohn, Bill Prady, Eddie Gorodetsky  Naren Shankar.  Altogether there have been more than ten writers since 2003.

Chuck Lorre is also the creator/ producer of the show.  Other talents he has include directing and composing.   Lorre has created many hit sitcoms including Grace Under Fire, Cybill, Dharma & Greg, Two and a Half Men, and The Big Bang Theory.   Lorre also served as an executive producer of Roseanne and Mike & Molly.

After leaving school, Lorre toured the United States as a guitarist and songwriter. [3] He wrote Deborah Harry’s radio hit single “French Kissin’ in the USA” for her 1986 Rockbird album.[3] Lorre also composed the soundtrack to the 1987 television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Dennis Challen Brown.[4] [5] [6] Lorre shifted into writing, being a writer on the show Roseanne, 1990–1992, (writer, co-executive producer, supervising producer).

Lorre was already famous in his own right.  But he once again came into the spotlight when he tried to intervene in the Charlie Sheen debacle.  The 46-year-old Sheen reportedly participated in a 36-hour bender in Las Vegas in January 2011 that included cocaine, booze, and porn stars.  Sheen went to rehab and was fired from the show.  Afterwards, Sheen told TMZ that Lorre was a “charlatan (who) chose not to do his job” and called him a “stupid, stupid little man.”  Afterwards, CBS and Warner Bros. hired Ashton Kutcher as Sheen’s replacement, and the show currently aired on its tenth season.

At a later time, Lorre called the firing of “his friend for 8 1/2 years” heartbreaking.

An Evening with "Two and a Half Men" - Arrivals

Lee Aronsohm

As mentioned above, in 2003 till present, Lorre’s fourth show was Two and a Half Men with co-creator Lee Aronsohn.   Another hit for Lorre was his fifth show called The Big Bang Theory that he co- created it with Bill Prady.

Lorre seems to be able to capture the imagination of a few sort of off character sense of humor individuals and their audience.    He has a six sense of comic relief and timing wrapped around an almost fanatical sense of sexual obsession.  Take away the sexual judgments, whether it is right or wrong morally, it is funny in an eerie sort of way.   We are not supposed to be that debased but it’s fun to escape into our fantasy lives…even if it’s only for only a half hour.

Whether Lorre writes the episode or not, being a producer has a tremendous influence on the writing and the final product.  Because of the success of his shows, it shows he certainly has a feel for what the audience is looking for.  And for this reason he is the number one writer of the show.
